I took this painting to Northwest By Northwest Gallery in Cannon Beach. Cannon Beach is a lovely place to visit! There is no place quite like the Oregon Coast, the huge rocks on the beach (Haystack Rock), and the marine life all around the rocks is worth seeing.

Columbia Gorge Family Medical Center

Oaks in the Desert :: 12in x 48in :: kiln dried birch cradled panel

I just love the variety of climate zones we have here in Oregon. To the East we have desert with Oaks and grasses, and to the West, we have waterfalls and a variety of Fir and Evergreen Trees. This painting is of the desert landscape with oaks in the foreground, one of my favorite subjects to paint. I painted this on kiln dried birch panel, with two coats of shellac. It's fun to look at in person, because I left some of the birch showing through the painting. You can view it if you are in the Hood River area, at the Columbia Gorge Family Medical Center.

The Shapes of Trees

12" x 48" ::  cradled wood panel 2" deep

The shapes of trees fascinate me. I have had this idea in mind for a painting since this summer, to paint on wood, and have the wood show through as part of the light values in the painting. It's hard to see in a photo, but the light color of the actual wood is showing through in parts of the painting. The wood has two coats of shellac as a clear gesso.

Gorge Trees

Part of a Columbia Gorge Tree Series I am working on... I am painting this series on wood, that shows through the light parts of the painting, in the sky and the foreground. I think the wood showing through has an interesting look to it as part of the overall composition.

I will be putting this painting in the Columbia Center for the Arts Gallery in Hood River for the month of October.

16"x20" :: oil on 3/4 inch cradled basswood :: can be hung without a frame, it would also look great framed in a floater frame.

Vineyard Harvest

Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour - Studio Sale Next Weekend May 14 & 15

Next weekend is the Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour May 14 & 15!
42 regional artists will be opening their studios to the world to come in and see what they are working on, their methods and how they make it happen. I have been very busy getting ready for the Tour. This is one of the large paintings I am currently working on for the show/tour (two paintings, a sort of diptych, but they aren't attached) of the Hills in Eastern Oregon. Each painting measures 2ft x 2ft. They will be framed separately, but hung side by side. They will be available for purchase from my studio either separately or together. I will post a photo when they are finished and framed!
I, like the 40 plus artists participating this year, am very excited! It is a wonderful opportunity to discover all of the amazing talent we have here in, and around The Columbia Gorge, National Scenic Area.

Martin's Beach - sold

Martin's Beach is the title of this painting, based on the view from the beach house of one of the characters in the play, "If We Are Women". Soroptimist International and Judie Hanel present this award winning play by Canadian playwright Joanna McClelland Glass in the Columbia Center for the Arts June 12 -21. This play was the winner of the 1994 Governor General's Award for Literary Merit.
